Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Pat Quinn for Re-Election as Governor of Illinois

WASHINGTON (Sept. 9, 2014) -- The Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading political advocacy organization for animal welfare, announces its endorsement of Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn for re-election. Citing his support of animal protection policies the HSLF urges voters in Illinois to support Quinn in November’s general election.

“During his time as governor, Pat Quinn has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to animal welfare,” said Wayne Pacelle, executive vice president of the HSLF. “He has worked diligently and consistently to make Illinois a more animal-friendly state, and we urge voters who care about the humane treatment of animals to re-elect Pat Quinn.”

While serving as Governor of Illinois, Quinn has:

  • Signed a bill into law to ban the possession, sale, or distribution of shark fins within the state of Illinois (Public Act 97-0733)
  • Supported and signed the Puppy Lemon Law that protects pets and consumers who purchase dogs or cats from pet stores and holds these stores and their sources accountable if a veterinarian determines the animal was sick or diseased when purchased. (Public Act 98-0509)
  • Signed the Antifreeze Safety Law, which mandated a bittering agent be added to antifreeze manufactured and sold within the state, to prevent the accidental poisoning of children and animals. (Public Act 96-1218
  • Signed the Primate Pet Ban, which protects both human and animal welfare by prohibiting private ownership of primates. (Public Act 96-1219)
  • Signed a bill strengthening the Humane Care for Animals Act by providing restrictions on the practice of tethering dogs.  (Public Act 98-0101)
  • Signed the Animal Fighting Awareness Act which strengthened the Illinois Police Training Act by mandating instruction for law enforcement officers on handling animals using nonlethal methods. (Public Act 98-0311)
